A time to plant and a time to...

It's been a long time since the last post... probably the length of time it takes for the lettuce and other vegetables to come out ready for harvest! That's the kind of thing I will tell you about today just to give you an idea of the patience you need when working the soil.

After ploughing the ground I eventually planted the tomatoes and lettuce to start with around November 15. Later on, it was the turn of the cucumbers, water melons and melons to hit the ground with a little bit of manure (from our pigs and cow).

As I usually start work around 2pm, I tend to go to "Pika" in the morning 2 or 3 days a week, although I would like to go more often to help dad a bit more. All this to say that the first few weeks after planting is dedicated to "caressing" the plants and checking if any caterpillars whose names`are not on the list managed to break in and disturb the right development of the crops.
"Apres l'effort, le reconfort"is a French phrase that basically says that after the hard work comes the reward. And when you work the soil, your reward is to see the fruit of your labour and then taste it. On January 1, I picked my first lettuce (after 1 month and a half) and no need to tell you how proud I felt and how delicious it was. Since then I have harvested around 2 kilos of tomatoes along with parsley (that I now give away as there is far too much for us) and spring onions! It's time to go and enjoy what promises to be a feast because as you probably know, there is a time for everything and now is the time to ...

Starting Out...

Growing up in Guadeloupe means that I've always been surrounded by green things, big and small. Over the years I've been both a witness and active participant in growing stuff in our fertile land. A passion that carried on in London where despite just having a balcony(good size though) I was able to grow herbs, fruit and vegs for around seven years.
Now that I'm back home with a piece of land dad gave me, I moved to another level as you can see on the picture here. By the way it's not me on the tractor ploughing but it's the piece of land where you will find sweet potatoes, carrots, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, melon, water melon, spring onions, parsley, sweetcorn and much more to come.
On this blog, I will let you know when I plant seeds, how things are growing and when I harvest and enjoy them with the family. So stay tuned and find out more about gardening and how rewarding it can be (I will mention the hard work on another entry)!
